SEIU Local 1 Training Center
2-Year Apprenticeship Program

Orientation is on July 6th, 7th or 8th
Comprehensive training covering all aspects of building maintenance. Graduates are awarded Journeyman’s Certificate from the US Department of Labor. Mandatory for all newly hired “A” level employees. Classes meet 1 night per week.

Comprehensive instruction in basic Air Conditioning principles as well as how to troubleshoot common A/C problems. *Students must complete the Electricity course before enrolling.
LIFE SKILLS COURSES
*These courses are FREE to SEIU Members under the ABOMA Contract
English as a Second Language
Classes are taught in English, so we can accommodate a wide range of native languages (Spanish, Eastern European, Polish, etc.)
ESL
2 NIGHTS EACH WEEK FOR 12 WEEKS (24 TOTAL SESSIONS)
TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS 6PM-9PM
CLASS BEGINS TUESDAY, JULY 7th but students can join at any time
We also recently introduced a second level to the ESL training. We now offer “Beginner” and “Advanced” ESL Courses. Call for more information.

Heat Load Calculation Certification
6 Week Certification Course to help calculate how efficiently your building is running.
Mondays Beginning July 6th (6:00-9:00)
Basic HVAC Fundamentals – 8 Hour Refresher

10 Week Prep Course for the Stationary Engineer’s Exam (6pm-9pm)

*Must be a Chief, Assistant Chief or Graduate of the 2-year apprenticeship program to enroll and must provide the name of your sponsor when enrolling.

2-day course and test to receive your Pool & Spa Operator’s License

Heat Pump Certification
11 Week course to become certified to work on Heat Pumps

Building Automation Systems (BAS)
Using a computerized system to run the mechanical components of your building.

Drywall & Tile – 8 Hour Refresher
Hands-on training to learn drywall, patching, taping and tiling skills.

6 Week course to become certified to work with the new refrigerant for Heating & Air Conditioning

Highrise Plumbing Systems – 8 Hour Refresher
This course focuses on how water is distributed throughout a highrise residential building – Pumps, Risers, Sprinkler Systems, Cla-Val’s and VFD’s

Students that attend all 6 out of 7 classes will receive a certificate for the Door Staff Training Program.

CLASS #1- ORIENTATION
Students will go over the current ABOMA contract with regards to pension, benefits, holidays, sick days, the new 401k plan option, etc.
CLASS #2- CUSTOMER SERVICE & COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Looking sharp on the job, interacting with residents, knowing your building and your neighborhood.
CLASS #3- BUILDING EVACUATION
Proper evacuation procedures in an emergency situation.
CLASS #4- CRIME PREVENTION & ANTI-TERRORISM
Observation skills, making your building a hard target, keeping your building secure.
CLASS #5- CPR & AED CERTIFICATION: American Heart Association Certification
CLASS #6- UNDERSTANDING YOUR HEALTH BENEFITS Information on how to use
your health benefits (medical, dental, vision, prescription) to your advantage
CLASS #7- PROFESSIONALISM IN THE WORKPLACE Promoting a harassment-free environment among co-workers and residents in your building

CERTIFIED RESIDENTIAL ENGINEER'S PROGRAM
This program will start again in July, 2026 and last for one year. This is our highest level of training for Chief Engineers and spots are reserved through an application process. Classes include:
