SEIU Local 1 Training Center

2-Year Apprenticeship Program

Orientation is on January 5th, 6th or 7th            
Comprehensive training covering all aspects of building maintenance. Graduates are awarded Journeyman’s Certificate from the US Department of Labor. Mandatory for all newly hired “A” level employees. Classes meet 1 night per week.

OSHA compliance, protective equipment, financial literacy and familiarizing yourself with your health benefits


Hand Tools and Power Tools

Safe and proper use of hand tools and power tools in the workplace


Mathematics

How to read, use and create blueprints


Plumbing

Plumbing principles, repairs and preventive maintenance

Low-Pressure Boiler Systems

Basic Electricity, Electrical Safety and Troubleshooting Electrical Systems. 

*Required before you can take HVAC


Carpentry

7 Weeks Beginning April 7, 8 or 9

Basic repairs to walls, tile, doors, floors, etc.

 
Locks & Keys 

Monday, Wednesday or Thursday (6p-10p)

7 Weeks Beginning January 5, 7 or 8

Locksmithing and key pinning


HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & A/C)

13 Weeks Beginning February 24, 25 or 26

Comprehensive instruction in basic Air Conditioning principles as well as how to troubleshoot common A/C problems.

*Students must complete Electricity course before enrolling.

LIFE SKILLS COURSES

*These courses are FREE to SEIU Members under the ABOMA Contract

English as a Second Language

Classes are taught in English, so we can accommodate a wide range of native languages 
(Spanish, Eastern European, Polish, etc.)

The English, Spanish and Computer classes can be joined after their start date. Just call us and we will get you signed up. 

CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES

*Chiefs, Assistants, and "A" Maintenance need 8 hours per year

Chicago Engineer's Exam Prep Class 
10 Week Prep Course for the Stationary Engineer’s Exam (6pm-9pm)

Mondays Beginning February 16th  

Exam will be given by the City on Wednesday, April 22nd        

*Must be a Chief, Assistant Chief or Graduate of the 2-year apprenticeship program to enroll and must provide the name of your sponsor when enrolling.

 

Certified Swimming Pool Operator's Course and Exam 

2-day course and test to receive your Pool & Spa Operator’s License

  • Wednesday & Thursday March 18 & 19 (8:30am-4:30pm)

  • Tuesday & Wednesday, May 19 & 20 (8:30-4:30pm)

Heat Load Calculation Certification 
6 Week Certification Course to help calculate how efficiently your building is running.

11 Week course to become certified to work on Heat Pumps

Actuators – Repair and Wiring

How to work on small motors that control dampers and valves in your building.

COURSES ARE OFFERED ON 10 CONSECUTIVE THURSDAYS 

DAY CLASSES (12:30 – 4:30) BEGIN JANUARY 8th or MARCH 19th  

NIGHT CLASSES (6:00PM – 10:00PM) BEGIN JANUARY 8th or MARCH 19th  

DOOR STAFF TRAINING

Students that attend all 6 out of 7 classes will receive a certificate for the Door Staff Training Program.

Evening Courses (6:00pm-10:00pm) begin TUESDAY, MARCH 3rd  ​

Daytime Courses (12:30pm-4:30pm) begin TUESDAY, MARCH 3rd

CLASS #1 ORIENTATION 
Students will go over the current ABOMA contract with regards to pension, benefits, holidays, sick days, the new 401k plan option, etc. 

CLASS #2 CUSTOMER SERVICE & COMMUNICATION SKILLS 
Looking sharp on the job, interacting with residents, knowing your building and your neighborhood. 

CLASS #3 BUILDING EVACUATION 
Proper evacuation procedures in an emergency situation.

CLASS #4 CRIME PREVENTION & ANTI-TERRORISM 
Observation skills, making your building a hard target, keeping your building secure. 

CLASS #5 CPR & AED CERTIFICATION

American Heart Association Certification

CLASS #6 UNDERSTANDING YOUR HEALTH BENEFITS

Information on how to use your health benefits (medical, dental, vision, prescription) to your advantage

CLASS #7 PROFESSIONALISM IN THE WORKPLACE

Promoting a harassment-free environment among co-workers and residents in your building

CERTIFIED RESIDENTIAL ENGINEER'S PROGRAM

This program will start again in June, 2026 and last for one year. This is our highest level of training for Chief Engineers and spots are reserved through an application process. Classes include:

•    Highrise Building Architecture and Construction
•    Energy Efficiency in Highrise Buildings
